Sadly, as we suspected, George Martin was injured during training and will not be able to defend the Aprilia colours at the Grand Prix MotoGP from Thailand.
As usual, little precise information has been given regarding the circumstances of this new accident, but the injuries cited in the press release issued by the Aprilia Racing team are far from trivial.
"Dear media, Jorge Martin suffered a complex fracture of the radius, some carpal bones on the left side and a fracture of the ipsilateral calcaneus during a training session. After a surgical consultation, it was decided to proceed with surgery that will take place tomorrow at the Dexeus Clinic in Barcelona in order to stabilize the fractures of the radius and the left scaphoid. Martin will miss the Thailand Grand Prix and the recovery time will be determined after the operation. Lorenzo Savadori will replace Martin in Thailand."
The length of the recovery from the surgery scheduled for tomorrow is still entirely undetermined, but in any case it is a very hard blow for the 2024 world champion and his new team. The reigning champion, who had already suffered a serious injury at the start of the season in Portimao in 2021, has so far completed only 90 laps on the RS-GP this winter, the majority of which were completed last November during the post-season tests in Barcelona.
Jorge Martin's absence from the opening round of the 2025 season will be the first time a reigning champion has not started the following campaign since Freddie Spencer in 1984, when the Spaniard made history last year by becoming the first rider from an independent team in the modern era to win the world title.
We wish him the best possible recovery.
