Michelin a remporté sa 400e victoire en Grand Prix moto à Jerez (Espagne) le week-end dernier grâce à Marc Marquez qui s’est imposé au Grand Prix d’Espagne ; une étape importante dans l’histoire sportive du manufacturier français.

Michelin s’était engagé en Championnat du monde 500cc en 1973 et avait remporté sa première victoire lors du célèbre TT sur l’Isle de Man grâce à l’Australien Jack Finlay, vainqueur du Senior Tourist Trophy sur Suzuki.

En 1974, Michelin a développé des pneus spécifiques aux Grands Prix moto. Jusque-là, il s’agissait de produits dérivés du commerce. Cette innovation a conduit au développement des pneus slicks utilisés en 1975 qui ont permis à Barry Sheene de gagner le TT d’Assen (Pays-Bas) cette année-là.

Sheene a offert le premier titre mondial 500cc à Michelin en 1976, titre qu’il a conservé en 1977, année durant laquelle Michelin a remporté toutes les courses dans la plus grande catégorie. Victoires et titres se sont succédé, tandis que Michelin n’a cessé d’innover avec l’introduction du pneu radial en Grand Prix moto en 1984. Le premier succès d’un pneu radial avant a été remporté lors de la deuxième épreuve, le Nation GP à Misano (Italie), avec Freddie Spencer. Plus tard cette année-là, Randy Mamola a imposé sa moto équipée de pneus Michelin à structure radiale avant et arrière au Grand Prix de San Marin, au Mugello.

Entre 1986 et 1989, Michelin a fait une véritable razzia sur les Grands Prix moto 500cc, 250cc, 125cc et 80cc, mais c’est surtout dans la grande catégorie que le palmarès de Michelin a atteint des paliers historiques. Wayne Gardner a offert la 100e victoire à Michelin au Brésil en 1987 et Mick Doohan a décroché le 200e succès, lui aussi au Brésil, en 1996. Puis Sete Gibernau a donné la 300e victoire à Michelin au Dutch TT (Pays-Bas) en 2003.

Outre les victoires, Michelin a également remporté de nombreux titres mondiaux avec des pilotes de légende comme Sheene, Spencer, Marco Lucchinelli, Franco Uncini, Eddie Lawson, Gardner, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, Doohan, Alex Crivillé, Kenny Roberts Jr., Valentino Rossi et Nicky Hayden, alors que la concurrence était ouverte (et rude) entre pneumaticiens. Entre 1994-1998 et 2001-2005, Doohan et Rossi ont décroché cinq titres consécutifs, tandis que Marquez a coiffé deux couronnes mondiales avec le retour de Michelin en tant que manufacturier unique.

Le dernier succès de Michelin en période de concurrence – où de nombreux manufacturiers étaient engagés dans la grande catégorie – remonte au Catalunya en 2008 avec Dani Pedrosa. S’ensuivie une longue période de sept ans de mono-manufacturier. Entre 1973 et 2008, Michelin compte 75% de victoires en 500cc/MotoGP avec Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Cagiva, et une seule avec Sanvenero quand Michel Frutschi a gagné le Grand Prix de France à Nogaro en 1982. La série de succès de Michelin a repris en 2016 avec le retour de la marque en MotoGP comme Fournisseur Officiel de Pneumatiques. Depuis, Michelin a remporté 40 victoires d’affilée dont la dernière avec Marquez dimanche. Durant cette période, Michelin a gagné avec un nouveau partenaire, Ducati. Avec le contrat de Michelin en MotoGP prolongé jusqu’à 2023, il y a fort à parier que tout le paddock célèbrera la 500e victoire de Michelin en Grand Prix moto.

48 pilotes, issus de 11 pays différents ont gagné en Grand Prix moto avec Michelin sur 51 circuits différents autour du monde – certains ayant connu d’importantes modifications -, ce qui prouve que les pneus Michelin ont toujours été au top de la performance pour les meilleurs pilotes et les meilleures motos du monde.

Et n’oublions pas que ce taux de 73% de victoire en concurrence a été établi alors que Michelin n’avait remporté que trois victoires lors des trois premières saisons entre 1973 et 1975 !
